Electronic Mail
The oldest and the most popular Internet service, electronic mail (email), is the one-way
transmission or exchanging of messages and files over a computer network to one or more
specified user.
Mailing List
Mailing list is a group of email names and email addresses given a single name or entity.
When an email is sent to the mailing list, every person on the list receives a copy of the message
in his or her email inbox.
Newsgroup/Message Board
A newsgroup is an online discussion about a particular topic. Users participating
in a newsgroup posts a message called an article.
File Transfer Protocol
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an Internet standard that allows file
uploading and downloading with other computers on the Internet.
Chat
A chat is a real-time typed conversation that takes place over a computer network.
Instant Messaging
A real-time Internet communication service, instant messaging (IM)
notifies the user when one or more people are online and then allows him or
her to exchange messages or files or join a private chat room with them.
Search Engine
Researchers’ best friend is another Internet service – the search engine.
In a restricted network, the basic idea is that all
registered facilities located on one or more servers can
be found on an elaborate facility by interest group.
A web-based public search engine
is helpful in locating information that you do not know
the exact web address of or are
not really looking for a particular website but in need of information
about a topic. There are several
search engines for al types of search engine. Some search engines
can restrict its searches to a
specific type of information such as:
• Images – pictures, diagrams,
and drawings
• Videos – home videos, music
videos, television programs, and movie clips
• Audio – music, songs, recordings,
and sounds
• Publications – news articles,
journals, and books
• Maps – maps of a business or
address, or driving directions to a destination
• People or Businesses –
addresses and telephone numbers
• Blogs – specific opinions and
ideas of others
World Wide Web
As discussed in the previous lesson, the World Wide Web is considered as the youngest but
most important Internet service to date.
